Why ME Awareness Month?

Invest in ME is about education, publicising and lobbying regarding the treatment of ME sufferers in the UK and regarding the need for a national strategy and ring-fenced public funding of biomedical research into ME.

Invest in ME feel that ME Awareness Week (as it had become in the past) had passed with too little public attention gained - mainly due to everything being packed into one day or one week.

We believe an illness as serious as ME requires more than one day and more than one week in the year to perform coordinated campaigning to raise awareness for an illness which is more prevalent than many people would imagine and far less benign than is often portrayed by the media and the government.

Since Invest in ME started we have been actively promoting a full month of campaigning for ME, with one event following another, up and down the country?
If one looks at the successful McMillan campaign for Cancer then one can see what an impact that has around the country. The McMillan campaigns last a whole month and attract much publicity and, more importantly, huge funds.

We would like to see and support many events during the month of May to extend the visibility of this “Hidden National Scandal” to increase public awareness and fund-raising opportunities

Why 12th May?

12th May is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birthday (who is thought to have suffered M.E. on her return from the Crimea) and is the focal point of ME Awareness Month.
