Reply to IiME's Letter to the Author of "New GP Guidelines for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" - published in Innovait, 8 July 2011

AUGUST 2011

Thank you for your e-mail re our recent article regarding ME that was sent directly to its author.

The main thrust of your complaint seems to be that ME is listed under the Mental Health section of the GP Curriculum.

First, that is not the case. ME is not mentioned within the GP Curriculum at all. Management of patients presenting with fatigue to general practice is mentioned, as stated in this article, in the Mental Health Section of the GP Curriculum.

Second, neither the authors of the article nor the Editors of InnovAiT have any input into the composition or organisation of the RCGP Curriculum. All InnovAiT articles must be linked to the RCGP Curriculum hence the reason that this article pointed out the discrepancy between tiredness being mentioned under the Mental Health Section within the RCGP Curriculum and the WHO Classification of ME as a neurological illness. No comment was made within the article about the appropriateness of either of these classifications.

I have passed on your comments to the RCGP regarding the GP Curriculum and I am sure that they will respond to you in due course.

Yours sincerely

Dr Chantal Simon
Executive Editor, InnovAiT

IiME will respond and meanwhile we look forward to the RCGP's statement
